Mother’s Day for ten years now has been quite difficult for me. When I was a junior in High School my mom passed away from a short battle of (stage four) breast cancer. The battle was so short, in fact, that I can’t remember most of it. I was so young and naive – and honestly did not for a moment think…my mom could actually pass away. Don’t get me wrong, the first thing I asked my dad when she was diagnosed was “could mom die?”… and after my dad replied, “there is a possibility, but your mama is strong”…I just never thought it would happen to our family.
I think the hardest part of losing my mom was her absence for the most wonderful events of my life (high school and college graduation, my engagement + living in San Diego, and of course … my wedding). I have shed a tear at every single event just wishing she was by my side. Everyone says, she is there in spirit which I completely and whole-heartedly agree, but it will never be the same.
I really didn’t want to get too emotional and personal on here (as I am tearing up writing this) – but I think it’s important to share a few of my life experiences as they have lead me to where I am today. My motivation and drive is completely inspired by her. Be thankful for the time you have with the mom in your life – make lasting memories. Because in the end, that is ALL that matters. I learned at a young age, life is not promised and I encourage you all to go out there and celebrate with your moms!
A few Mother’s Day Gift Ideas instead of flowers:
SPA DAY // I remember when I was younger my dad would come home on random evenings after work and my mom and I would have face masks on while doing our nails (well, I would do her nails because she was horrible at painting hers). Then we would watch movies with popcorn…they were the best! I also remember my mom always wanted to be included on my slumber parties to teach us important things like how to play poker and place bets… 😉
COFFEE DATE // who better to enjoy a cup of joe with than the mom in your life? I wasn’t at an age where I enjoyed to drink coffee, but now I would give anything to share a cup of coffee with her and good conversation.
CREATE A MOM + DAUGHTER COCKTAIL // celebrate life and being together the best way – with a cocktail in hand! 😉
TAKE A WALK // when my mom was sick, she was too weak to do much but she really enjoyed taking short walks outside. During our walks – we talked about life, laughed, and just enjoyed each other’s presence and fresh air. Walks with the ones you love = happiness.
DOCUMENT YOUR TIME TOGETHER // This one is very important…. take A LOT of photos together. I have very few photos of me and mom, well at least from about 10 yrs old to 15…there are probably a handful. Please, take more photos…you will never regret it and they are the best way to keep memories alive.
I hope you all enjoy your Mother’s Day weekend – no matter what you will be doing and who you will be celebrating with! Enjoy every minute of it.
This post is dedicated to all of the moms in my life:
Diane Mach, Juanita Packard, Kim Goosheh, RaDonna Booker, Dahlia Polk, Tona Jolly, Jill Hudson, Amie Packard, Stephanie Looser, my Oma, the women at Weokie Credit Union… gosh I hope I am not forgetting anyone. But you all know who you are and I am so thankful for each and every one of you.

Jessica
