unnamed-1 unnamedA couple of weeks ago, I was invited to an afternoon floral arrangement demo at Winston Flowers on Newbury St. with local bloggers, Laura and Natalie of The Boston Day Book, my dear friend – Mary of Millay Vintage.  I was really excited to explore their pretty shop, learn some tips + tricks for arranging flowers, and of course, meet the creative team! I took a few photos to share some of the tips with you guys!winston flowers event via oh, i design blogFirst an introduction: the beautiful gal in the photos, that’s Stefa, Winston’s talented designer!

Arrangement #1

Flowers/Plants Used:

Florida Ruskus
Blue Dutch Hydrangea
White “Mondial” Roses
Green Hydrangea
Hosta leaves
a cut succulent called an “Echeveria”

Step One // Make a grid in a medium-sized vase – Stefa used Florida Ruskus.

Step Two // Begin with your largest plant or flower. Measure and cut the flowers at an angle *tip: to measure for the Blue Dutch Hydrangea above, for example, since the stem is currently sitting at the lower left of the vase, that’s where you would measure before cutting instead of just standing the flower straight up and cutting.

*tip: group similar flowers together in bunches so the colors are vibrant and the arrangement looks organized. See how Stefa grouped the roses together? Also, make sure there are varying heights in the arrangement to create interest.

On to the next one! For this demo, The team wanted to show us how to create a “terrarium” but out of flowers. How cool is that?! This one really made an impression on me because I have a couple larger glass vases like the one above and I never know how to make it look decent with flowers.

Flowers/Plants Used:

White “Mondial” Roses
Green Hydrangea
Poppy Pods

Step One // Create a base and add some water. She used some green hydrangea and leaves to create the “moss” look.

Step Two // Begin cutting the flowers at an angle an placing them at different heights. Just be sure they are hitting the water somewhere so they don’t die. 🙂Winston Flowers Studio Tour via Oh, I Design BlogWinston Flowers Studio Tour via Oh, I Design Blog Winston Flowers Studio Tour via Oh, I Design BlogWinston Flowers Studio Tour via Oh, I Design BlogThen we got to pick out some flowers and create our own little arrangement to take home! I was overly obsessed with how soft the bunny grass was so I grabbed a few of those and a garden rose, along with the cool poppy pod. After I put it together, I wasn’t fully happy with the result so I asked Stefa what she would add…and she grabbed some “Magical Coral” Dutch Hydrangea and wah lah! The perfect little arrangement. I want to take a moment to thank Kate Evans, Stefa Donahue, Adrienne Weston and Mallory Dixon for giving us a tour of their shop and putting on such a lovely event for us! Oh, and I must give a shout out to Bob for the delicious treats!

If you are in Boston, you must go check out their shop on Newbury St. – they are so great! They also have locations here. 🙂
