I constantly hear from my clients that one of the most daunting parts of decorating a room is bringing in color. And I get it! All you hear in your head is: “no I shouldn’t buy that bright yellow sofa that I am in love with because then my rug won’t match and my entire room will be ruined because of a sofa” or “is it okay to mix two bright colors…what if there’s a little blue on the edge of this pillow…is that okay, jessica?!” 🙂 No question is a dumb one!
But don’t worry guys, I want to bring you some confidence when you are introducing bright colors into your space. Recently, Chairish, an online curated shop where design-lovers can buy and purchase used vintage furniture & decor, asked me to take a room from white to bright using one of their gorgeous vintage rugs. Since I am always up for a good challenge and Chairish happens to be one of my first online stops for clients, I was so excited!!
I decided on the gorgeous Green Abrash Turkish rug below and built the room off of it’s beautiful color and texture. You can also shop the rest of their beautiful selection of rugs here. Now here’s what I came up with:The color variation in the rug inspired me to bring in some lighter greens. When I create a color palette off of a bold color, I always try to find another color to complement it. In this case, I started with dark green, lime green and threw in a bright pink for fun. To tone down the room, so you don’t feel nauseous right when you walk in, I chose two neutral furniture pieces (a dark grey velvet sofa and a linen natural chair). Sometimes when I know I am playing up the color in a space I will try to match another element in the room in some way – for instance, in this style board I chose to keep the accents gold.
Ta Da! This room has just a slight amount of pattern and could even use a bit more in the window treatments if you wanted to go all out! Also, if you ever got tired of the bright pink you could switch out the pillows for another color – like bright blue! 🙂 Color is so fun.
Do you have any color dilemmas in one of your rooms? Feel free to leave any questions for me in the comments. A big thank you to Chairish for putting me up to the challenge and for just being awesome!
